My alarm clock sang to me at 5:30 this morning and my husband, daughter, two dogs, and I left shortly after 6:00 to spend the morning on a trail. Over the last couple of days we chatted about which trail to hike and tossed around ideas of where to go. There are so many trails to choose from within two hours of Winnipeg.

While in the McDonald’s drive-thru, as we ordered coffee and breakfast sandwiches, we decided on Ancient Beach Trail in Grand Beach Provincial Park.
As we drove down the single lane highway that would take us to Lake Winnipeg, I looked out the window into the passing thick forest. I recalled a phrase that I heard yesterday. A phrase that I told myself to remember.
I attended my very good friends’ ceremony and celebration for completing her Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I believe the universe provides us with what we need and when we need it. I listened intently to a Cree elder speak about moral cleanliness. We need the thunder in our life and the rain to cleanse us.
“We rely on nature. Nature does not rely on us.”
Outside in nature during the early morning is where I belong. I realized this last summer as I stood on a dock fishing by myself, looking out onto a sun-lit lake with mist rising into the air from the surface. Another time, I gave my soul what it needed when I woke up at 4:30 in the morning after a late night country music festival so that I could hike before driving home.
If there is an opportunity to hike, fish, or just sip coffee, I will be found outside in the early morning whether it be a day off, a vacation, or a holiday.
I sometimes wonder why I haven’t brought this frame of mind to my daily routine. I walk my dogs daily in the morning but most often it is done during a rush to the school bus stop and a quick jaunt for them to complete their business.
Why don’t I make time for myself to mediate in the morning outside on my deck? Why do I hit the snooze alarm countless times? With knowing what nature gives me, the answer to waking up early during the week should be simple but for some reason, whatever it is, it is not that simple. It’s time to change that.
My goal this week is to wake up early and sip coffee on my back deck, 3 out of the 5 mornings.
